On The Patio - Things Of Beauty

Decorating the outside of your home or business premises is always fun.  Balancing practicality with aesthetics is both challenging and rewarding as this is the best time you can be at your most creative.  And seeing other people’s reactions to your work of art is worth all the trouble taken.
If you have always wanted to venture into outdoor furnishing but felt you never had the space, take a good look around.  Maybe there IS a little open space in some nook that, with a little imagination, you can transform into a cozy haven of sorts.
Some of the most obvious open spaces you can work your magic on are:
1.    Patios
2.    Porches
3.    Balconies
4.    Pool sides
5.    Conservatories
6.    Alcoves
7.    Window seats
8.    Under skylights
When decorating outdoors, details are important.  You would be surprised at how much difference little detailing, often referred to as accents, can cause to the overall effect.  These accents are the patio cushions, shades, tapestry and even color scheme, just to name a few.
The kind of patio cushion needed for your little outdoor space depends on the type of furniture you have.  Bigger, bulkier pieces often need patio cushions that are slightly larger or with additional details like embroidery or layering.  And unless your cushions are big, bean bag monstrosities, you may find that you will need more than just two or three so your patio cushions do not seem like they are “drowning” in your furniture. It would also help if they were in different colors so they stand out more.
Patio furniture needs to be cost-effective as well.  This includes its cushions, cushion covers, shades and tapestries, and other accessories.  Obtaining furnishings that are cost-effective means finding décor items that are:
1.    Weather resistant, no matter how harsh the climate.
2.    Low in maintenance so less time and effort is needed to ensure that it looks good at all times.
3.    Versatile enough for all weather so it would not matter if it were to rain or shine, the chaise would still look good outdoors.
4.    Not so trendy that when the furniture fad ends, your furnishings look outdated.
5.    Real value for money.  While it may be cheap, make sure it lasts and does not collapse after only a few months’ use.
One of the best materials to consider in outdoor furniture is wicker.  Wicker outdoor furniture is durable, strong yet light, which is why it is often the preferred choice for both personal and business use.  Wicker is also easy to maintain in the long run – often all that is needed is a brush and coat of paint or varnish to retain its luster.
Outdoor wicker can be seen particularly in furniture sets – lounge chairs, coffee tables, armchairs, chaises and even lazy boys.  And because wicker as a material is so often used in furniture, it is easily accessible.  This means it is easy to match your furniture set with lamp shades, pots, vases, baskets and other smaller décor items.
All these can be considered for those with larger space.  What about for smaller spaces?  Sometimes, all that is needed is a table set for four under a patio umbrella.  Having one in a matching color set or sometimes, in complete contrast (done tastefully and with expert supervision, preferably!) may be all that is needed to spice up that little area.
These patio umbrellas come made of different materials – some are made of stainless steel while others are made of aluminum, wood and most commonly, plastic.  No matter which your choice, it is the size of the patio umbrella that is important.  Make sure you measure your space before purchasing the patio umbrella and when you finally buy one, make sure you have a return policy on it in case it proves too big or small for your space.
It does not matter which you purchase first – your patio umbrella or patio furniture.  Each should complement the other, and both must highlight the overall theme of your outdoor space.  If either your patio umbrella or furniture is too big for the other, you will find the end result a little comical and unbalanced.  When done well, you will find that your time and effort has been well spent.
