Consider Awnings; They Are Good Substitute For Patio Umbrellas

A patio is not what it used to be. Today it is treated as an outdoor room and therefore one pays more attention to its décor than he did couple of years ago. Unless you have just bought a house, you must already have some sort of patio décor in place. Before you go for a makeover, ask yourself:
1. What do you like about the space?
2. What do you dislike about this space?
3. Is the area private enough for you?
4. How many people generally use it?
5. For what purpose would you like to use it?
6. Is the outdoor furniture you already have adequate for you?
7. If it is not, will you like to change them all together?
8. Do you need precaution against insects and bugs?
9. Are you satisfied with the surrounding landscape or does it need a complete makeover?
10.Is the lighting system adequate? Are there hook ups for your music system?

Once you have found the answer to all these questions, only then you should start on the renovation work. The outdoor furniture that you will need will largely depend on the answer to question number 5. If it is more for personal relaxation, the furnishing will be different than if it were used more as the family room. If entertaining is your idea, the furnishing will be of another kind.

However, it is always better to develop it as an outdoor living room with space for cooking and dining facility at appropriate corners. If the patio is smaller or is adjacent to the kitchen, you can do away with the cooking part and concentrate more on the sitting area. You can have separate dining set though. Some like to demarcate the areas with different types floor tiles. Defining areas with potted plants is also a popular idea, but beware of children running and tripping over them.

It helps if you pick up a theme and develop the entire place around it. Then again, you can do without one also. The idea is to have an aesthetically pleasant place, which is harmonious by nature. Wicker furniture looks good in an open space and goes with most of the themes, but that should be synthetic wicker. Most of the outdoor wicker sets you see today are made from synthetic resins. However, you would not know that unless you are told.

Along with sofas, ottomans, tables, chairs you should also make some provision for storing barbeque equipments, table settings, gardening equipments etc. Most of the outdoor furniture will come with cushions. You will be wise to arrange for storing them too. Leaving them outside twenty-four hours a day, three-sixty-five days a year may not be a good idea.

Two more important patio fixtures that is a must-have today are an outdoor heater and an umbrella. There are mainly three types of outdoor heaters, one run by electricity, another run by natural gas and the third is run by wood. While the first two are preferred by many because of their convenience, you can opt for the third if you are fond of the old world charm. We are talking about chimenea, which run on wood. People generally burn pinion wood for their aromatic scent and bug repellent qualities in these heaters. Therefore, if bugs and insects are your problem chimenea is your answer.

While outdoor heaters keep you warm and cozy, even on a cold day and help the party to run even as the mercury keeps dropping, patio umbrellas help you to keep cool on a warm day. However, before you buy one, look for other options as well. Awnings are good substitute for patio umbrellas. They are fitted against a wall and are more or less a permanent structure. In places where snow is heavy or wind is strong, the awnings are made with aluminum sheet. Or else they are mostly made with canvas.

Patio umbrellas on the other hand are for temporary use and can be put up anywhere in the patio. However, be a little careful about the umbrella base. If the umbrella is positioned through the table, the base can be lighter because the table add weight and help to hold down the umbrella. On the other hand, the base required for freestanding patio umbrellas has to be heavier. A freestanding 9’ umbrella needs at least 75 lb base.

Whatever, patio fixture you buy, make sure they are easy to clean and easy to keep. Moreover, be innovative. We can give you ideas, but you need to transform them into reality. Therefore, be bold and let your imagination fly.
