Decorating Your Patio – What You Need
Want to decorate your patio? Here are some things you may want to consider getting:
1. Patio umbrellas. These depend on whether or not you have ample space. To double check, measure the umbrella you have in mind first, then go back and measure it out exactly where you intend to have it erected. Measuring alone is not enough – the best way is to bring the patio umbrella back and try it out. But make sure you have an exchange policy at the store where you bought it from first – the last thing you need is a patio umbrella you would have to get rid of at a garage sale.
2. Outdoor furniture. You have the wide variety of plastic, wood, bamboo, rattan, aluminum or wicker to choose from as they are all equally durable and weather-resistant. The main difference between them is their cost – rattan, bamboo and wood are normally the most expensive. The cheapest is usually plastic. Many, however, are not too fond of plastic outdoor furniture in their homes as they are usually less appealing physically than their counterparts. For outdoor furnishing that is not too expensive yet stylishly designed, your best choice could be wicker patio furniture.
3. Patio accessories. Lampshades, baskets, pots, plants – anything to add as accents to your overall decorating will highlight the beauty of your outdoor space. Just remember that they are supposed to accessorize and complement your outdoor furniture and not overwhelm it. One of the most effective accessories is the outdoor cushion.
4. Appropriate refurbishment. Paint work, varnish, polish or just a good scrub? You need to decide on the amount of work needed for your outdoor area. Sometimes, retiling might be necessary, particularly if it is the pool area and shows clear signs of wear and tear.
5. Additional built-ins. Be it freestanding fans or outdoor heaters that you need to install, evaluate your area and needs before actually venturing out to get one. Sometimes, the natural geographical position of your space will solve any chilly or warm days – you could be in a windy spot, for instance, or be in a valley blocked from chilly winds by mountains, hills or higher ground on either side. Getting fans or outdoor heaters in these situations may mean unnecessary spending.
Whatever you decide on for your outdoor space, you have to remember that outdoor furnishing has to be at least twice more long-lasting than the ones for the inside of your home. This is because they are twice (or more) as much exposed to the weather.
Constant exposure to rain, hot sun, sleet, dust and sleet, not to mention the constant exposure to wet and dry conditions will take its toll on the fixtures, no matter how strong or durable they may be. With your busy schedule, you will also not have enough time to constantly worry about refurbishing or repair works that is needed for your outdoor furniture.
With additional fixtures like fans and outdoor heaters, if you are living in a place with a harsh climate, it may be a better idea to get freestanding or portable ones. This reduces the possibility of you having to replace these electrical items after constant exposure. It is also probably safer not to have them built-in under such circumstances for safety reasons – electrical devices might trigger off sparks that can start a fire.
So how do you protect your precious outdoor fixtures? One way is to close up patio umbrellas when not in use to reduce the instances of their colors fading sooner than necessary. This also protects them from being torn off during strong winds. Even better, remove the patio umbrellas from their stands and put them away so they do not fall over and accidentally hurt someone.
As for your wicker patio furniture, wipe them dry after they get wet so you reduce the chances of mold gathering. After a while, your wicker furniture might need some refurbishing works done. If this is necessary, a coat of polish or different colored paint may be all you need. Wicker is one of the easiest to maintain on a long-term basis, which is probably why wicker patio furniture is one of the most popular choices in both private and commercial locations.
