The conventional patio heaters works on convectional mode. They heat up the air, which in turn heats up the object within its range. However, a lot of heat is wasted because the wind does not blow in the way you want all the time.

Outdoor heaters that uses the radiant heat does not heat up the air in between, but only the solid object in its path and so less heat is lost. However, gas patio heaters are also very popular these days. Whatever you buy, keep the portability or the lack of it in mind. If your patio furniture is set permanently at one place, you can buy fixed heaters. Such heaters are steadier.
